Some years ago, my brother gave me a bottle of wine that cost 10 times what I had ever paid for a bottle (it was Christmas). I wasn’t sure I’d be able to tell the difference between a modest California burgundy and an expensive and old French burgundy. It would be too much for one or two people, so I invited another couple over for dinner-I knew the husband, Ron, was against drinking alcoholic beverages on principal, so it was a safe choice, in case I really like the wine.
First, I discovered that even I could tell the difference between a great bottle of wine and what I normally drank. Secondly, I discovered that principaled tea-totallers can’t be trusted. Ron took a sip-just as a learning experience-decided he liked it and drank half the bottle. He said it didn’t count as booze because it was a learning experience.
Poison is poison … and people are people. Some time in the future, when the whole world is on the wine-snobbery bandwagon, and wine expertise is no longer special or appreciated, there will undoubtedly be ‘experts’ who can demonstrate the proper way to discern sugar-coated buffalo chips from the cheaper, more mass-produced cow variant :-)
I haven’t a clue what I’m doing. I’m more the pour and guzzle kind of wine enthusiast.

Too true about the wine thing…only Frasier and Niles know the differences. :)

I could never quite understand all the fuss and pretentiousness over a bottle of grape juice gone bad.
