I might get the black spot just for revealing these.
Have you ever wondered if a movie director was trying to convey a secret message? Perhaps there are winks to the audience or hints that go largely unnoticed. Well, today we’re going to discuss the top 10 conspiracy theories in movie plots.
1. Willy Wonka is a serial killer. (Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory - 1971)
This theory says that Willy Wonka snapped years ago and has since created a deathtrap for his young victims. Their golden tickets seal their fate. If you recall, there were several comments made about children going missing along the ride. Remember the comment about the bad egg of a girl that goes down the garbage chute and into the furnace? And it seems too coincidental that his Oompa Loompas are always ready with a death song. *shiver*
There are some who go as far as to say that Willy uses the children as ingredients for his candy. The weird guy with the cart had it right when he said that nobody ever comes out. How come nobody listens to creepy cart guys anymore?
2. Jack is only in Rose’s imagination. (Titanic - 1997)
Was Rose so depressed with the thought of marrying her fiancé that she literally dreamed up Jack Dawson? I mean, they did just meet before Rose hurled herself over the side of the ship. Which would’ve been convenient, seeing how the ship tries to drown everyone not long after.
If this is true, Rose would have had to imagine up the dinner conversation where other people talk directly to Jack.
So, I guess she poses in the nude for an hour for no reason.
3. Doc Brown is suicidal. (Back to the Future - 1985)
Putting aside that he doublecrossed some terrorists, Doc insists he stand in front of the DeLorean with it going at top speed, even before knowing whether it would truly leap back in time to avoid hitting him.
4. Jessie’s past owner (Emily) was Andy’s mom. (Toy Story 2 - 1999)
Could it be that Jessie’s owner was Andy’s mom before she outgrew Jessie and donated her? Technically, Andy’s mom’s name is never revealed, so it’s possible. Both Woody and Jessie are from the same set when Andy’s mom was a girl. It’s strange that Andy’s cowboy hat looks exactly like Jessie’s and not Woody’s, isn’t it?
5. It’s all in the same Pixar universe.
Basically, this theory is that all of the movies from the studio are interconnected. Because of the Easter eggs and cameos sprinkled into each movie, fans are convinced that all the characters live in the same universe.
6. Kubrick faked the moon landing and shows off. (The Shining - 1980)
Some people believe Stanley Kubrick not only filmed The Shining but also faked the moon landing on film. The intriguing yet far-fetched evidence is seen in the movie, where they think Kubrick is showing off. For example, little Danny wears a knitted shirt with the word “Apollo” on it. Then Kubrick decides to change the room from 217 to 237, reflecting the 237 miles from the Earth to the Moon.
Coincidence? Probably.
7. Marsellus’s soul is in the briefcase. (Pulp Fiction - 1994)
The guesses of what’s in the briefcase are all over the place, but the most popular hunch is that it’s Marsellus Wallace’s soul. Legend has it that when you make a deal with the devil for your soul, he harvests it from the back of your head. Interestingly enough, when the two speak later, Marsellus has a strange looking adhesive bandage on the back of his head, near the base of his skull.
The briefcase’s combination of 666 also speaks loudly to this theory. That, or the combination maker is lazy and oblivious to the mark of the beast.
8. Ferris is Cameron’s alter ego. (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off - 1986)
Could Ferris be a figment of Cameron’s daydreams? Reminiscent of Fight Club, maybe Ferris is Cameron’s alter ego, willing to do things that he would never dare. Cameron even brushes Ferris off at the end when he realizes that he doesn’t need him anymore.
9. There were multiple James Bonds. (James Bond Franchise - 1962+)
In 53 years, there have been many different actors who have played James Bond. Some fans think that James Bond is not an actual name but a codename, and that each different James Bond is the new James Bond who assumes the codename within the story. If that’s true, even in the story’s plot, it was never intended to be the same person all along.
10. Sandy actually drowned and dreamed up the movie’s plot. (Grease - 1978)
In the song Summer Nights, Danny sings about how he saved Sandy’s life. Some fans believe that Danny was unsuccessful, and Sandy drowned after all and that Grease was all just a dream Sandy had right before dying. It must have been fast-forwarded rather quickly to fit into the 1-2 seconds between consciousness.
To add further evidence, at the end, Sandy is seen flying off into the sky in a red convertible. If that isn’t symbolism, I don’t know what is.

The only one I buy into is no.4. Makes sense to me but I like theories like this. Makes the films more interesting when I watch them again knowing the possible theory behind it. Great post.

Very interesting post. I had never heard the theories about Willy Wonka or Grease. Good point with the car ride at the end, makes perfect sense!

The original Casino Royale played with the idea from #9. It gave them a perfect excuse to have David Niven and Peter Sellers play James Bond in the same movie.

Oddly the “James Bond as cover name” story has become a hot subject of discussion in a Star Trek forum I’ve been reading. So a lot of people who don’t really care particularly about James Bond movies have suddenly been offering very precisely-argued points about how the Bond movies could possibly fit together or not.

I read a theory the other day about The Matrix that reckons Cypher is actually ‘The One’ and not Neo, because in the first film he manages to have a conversation inside the Matrix with Agent Smith. Everybody else needs an operator to hack into and then get out of the Matrix, but Cypher managed to do it all alone. The only way he could have done it is if he could enter and exit the Matrix at will, making him, The One.

I have seen an elaborate video explaining the Pixar movie connection; some aspects are stretched to fit the theory but it seems thoughtful.
Regarding Doc Brown, are you referring to the time he tested the DeLorean at Twin Pines Mall? If so, it does seem quite dangerous for him to be standing in front of the speeding car. What makes it worse is he invited Marty McFly to stand right beside him.

Not only invited, but tugged him back into the path of the car. lol
